The method is illustrated using July–August daily mean temperature at 2 m height (T2m) time-series over the Netherlands and 500 hPa geopotential height (Z500) time-series over the Euroatlantic region of the 5 ECMWF reanalysis dataset (ERA40). The method identifies patterns in the Z500 time-series that optimally describe, in a precise mathematical sense, the relationship with local warm extremes in the Netherlands. Two patterns are identified; the most important one corresponds to a blocking high pressure system leading to subsidence and calm, dry and sunny conditions over the Netherlands. The second one corresponds to 10 a rare, easterly flow regime bringing warm, dry air into the region. The patterns are robust; they are also identified in shorter subsamples of the total dataset. The method is generally applicable and might prove useful in evaluating the performance of climate models in simulating local weather extremes.

This study utilizes a decade long (2005-2014) monthly data of Total Column Tropospheric Ozone (TCTO) in Dubson units to evaluate the spatial and temporal trend of LAO over some major cities of West Africa, namely Lagos, Accra, Niamey, Abuja, Bamako, Dakar, Agadez, Conakry, Kano, and Ouagadougou which are either capital cites or major commercial hubs, where the population ranges from 0.09 millio...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional numerical analysis of a thermally generated mesoscale wind system observed in the Mackenzie Basin, New Zealand
In the past four decades, the importance of local air circulations for air pollution transport, weather forecasting, and land-use management has been realised. Thermally driven circulations, such as sea-breezes and diurnal orographically induced winds, result from interplay between topographic and thermal forcings. Over simple flat terrain, these wind systems can be forecast with a high degree ...
متن کاملClimate extremes and climate change: The Russian heat wave and other climate extremes of 2010
[1] A global perspective is developed on a number of high impact climate extremes in 2010 through diagnostic studies of the anomalies, diabatic heating, and global energy and water cycles that demonstrate relationships among variables and across events. Natural variability, especially ENSO, and global warming from human influences together resulted in very high sea surface temperatures (SSTs) i...

Only a few numerical studies with mesoscale atmospheric models have been undertaken to explore the influence of vegetation on the generation and modification ofmesoscale atmospheric circulations. Nevertheless, these few studies have demonstrated the...
